The next morning,
Sister and I decided it was time to try Somewhere different. Some
place where people were kind to lost and lonely animals. Of course,
at this time, no one cared much for humans either who were lost,
lonely and homeless. What chance did two kittens have in the city?
It took two
days of scampering over walls, slinking through narrow twisted
alleys and avoiding humans to leave the City. We didn't even take
time to hunt, grabbing snacks of food where we found them.

On the far outskirts
of the City we snuck into a stable, and found a new friend! The
Watch Dog welcomed us and shared his food.

Sister begged
to stay, but The Watch Dog warned us that cats "Are not welcomed
at the Inn" He told us to keep moving north, onto the downs.
We traveled
for days, moving slowly, trying to find food. But it was winter
and so cold that all the little animals were in their burrows.
Finally it began to snow.
As night began
to fall, we took shelter in a small barn. There was no house nearby,
but there were small animals living there who welcomed us. They
smelled Good, but we were too polite and too tired to even think
of them as supper. They had offered us comfort.
Sister was exhausted.
And starving. The next morning I told her to get up, it was time
to go. She lay still. I nuzzled her and cleaned her head. Finally,
she opened her eyes and said, "I can not go on. You must
get help."
Then she closed
her eyes and sighed.
